Dawn Richard Lawsuit Against Diddy Dismissed, Attorneys Plan Refiling

Legal proceedings involving Sean “Diddy” Combs and former Danity Kane member Dawn Richard took a significant turn after a federal judge dismissed nearly all claims in Richard’s 2024 lawsuit. The ruling marks a setback for the singer, though one key allegation remains open for further action in state court.

According to a June 15 ruling obtained by USA TODAY, U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla dismissed 17 of Richard’s 18 legal claims with prejudice. This means those claims cannot be brought again in the same federal court.

One claim survived dismissal. The allegation centers on New York’s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Act and accuses Combs and former Bad Boy Records President Harve Pierre of “sexual assaults, harassment, and unlawful imprisonment.” The judge dismissed that claim without prejudice, allowing Richard the opportunity to pursue it in another court.

At the end of the ruling, Failla noted that Richard’s allegations, “if true, are execrable,” describing the alleged conduct as deeply disturbing.

Richard’s Attorneys Plan New Legal Action

Despite the court’s decision, Richard’s legal team signaled that the case is far from over.

“We certainly agree with the Judge that the allegations in this case are execrable,” attorney Arick Fudali of The Bloom Firm said in a statement. “The decision to allow our primary claim under the Gender-Motivated Violence Act to proceed in New York State Court is encouraging. Pursuing that claim remains a priority as the case moves forward. The team intends to continue fighting for Dawn until justice is achieved.”

USA TODAY reported that requests for comment were sent to Combs’ representatives following the ruling.

Richard worked closely with Combs from 2004 through 2012. Her involvement began during the filming of “Making the Band” and continued through her time in the group Diddy–Dirty Money.

In her lawsuit, Richard alleged she experienced emotional abuse, manipulation, threats of violence, food deprivation, sleep deprivation, and repeated demeaning treatment during those years.

Combs’ Separate Criminal Case

The civil ruling arrives as Combs continues serving a federal prison sentence. Authorities arrested him in September 2024 on charges including racketeering, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution.

Following a two-month trial, a 12-person jury acquitted Combs of racketeering and two sex-trafficking charges. However, jurors found him guilty on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. The court later sentenced him to 50 months in federal prison.

Combs’ legal team is currently seeking to overturn those convictions. He is scheduled for release from FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey in early 2028.

The decision substantially reduced the scope of Dawn Richard’s federal lawsuit, yet it did not close the matter entirely. The remaining claim under New York’s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Act can still move forward in state court.

As Richard’s legal team prepares its next steps and Combs continues to challenge his criminal conviction, both legal battles remain closely watched.
